About The Author

Dennis B. Alters, M.D., is a Board Certified Child, Adolescent & Adult Psychiatrist and one of the country's leading behavior management experts. Dr. Alters has maintained a private practice since 1982 in both Oceanside and San Diego, California.

Dr. Alters is skilled in the treatment of children and adults with psychiatric disorders. He is a child development scientist specializing in Attention Deficit Disorders and learning disabilities affecting children and adults. He consults for Trinity Youth Services Foster Agency and Mandometer Clinics for eating disorders.

In 1990 Dr. Alters reviewed his 11 years of therapeutic experiences with children. The outcome of that review is the positive and engaging Wizard's Way program, developed with the help of his son and a child therapist, Stephen Papaleo, Ph.D. The First Volume of Wizard's Way was introduced into the hospital setting.

Dr. Alters and his son presented Wizard's Way Volume One in 1994 at the annual conference of the California Psychiatric Association and in 1995 at the annual conference of the American Psychiatric Association.

The success of the first volume reinforced Dr. Alters' desire to provide this high quality program to children in the schools and community, resulting in Wizard's Way Second Volume.

Dr. Alters is currently completing Wizard's Way Volume Three, The Search for GooBat's Brainglue, which will focus on organizational skills, social skills and safety. This new addition to the Wizard's Way series will be appropriate for all children, particularly those with Attention Deficit Disorder and learning disabilities.

Dr. Alters actively lectures on youth suicide prevention and developed an inventory of high risk indicators for child and adolescent teenage suicide attempts and completion. This extensive project was inspired by David Schaffer, M.D. who chaired Project Prevent for the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. In 1986 Dr. Alters founded and chaired the San Diego Youth Suicide Prevention Project which affiliated with the National Committee for Youth Suicide Prevention.

His other projects have included seminars on child trauma and abuse, adapting sports to fit children's needs, creating a juvenile fire setter prevention program in 1987 and pioneering robot therapy for children in 1991. In 1989 Dr. Alters served the AACAP through the Committee of Psychiatric dimensions in infancy.

Dr. Alters attended the University of Miami School of Medicine, and graduated from the Adult Residency and Child Psychiatric Fellowship at UCSD. Dr. Alters directed two child hospital units and associated services. He participated in numerous community activities including Vice President of Agency Affairs to Big Brothers in 1982 and developed a screening protocol for potential Big Brothers, San Diego County Mental Health Advisory Board, Office of the San Diego Psychiatric Society. Dr. Alters is a fishing, skiing, yoga and swimming enthusiast. In 1990 he swam for the national championship U.C.S.D. Master's team. He creates children's books, is a songwriter, and sings and plays blues, jazz and rock harmonica.
